St Albans - History

Old Maps Of St Albans

National Library Of Scotland Maps. These are extremely detailed Ordnance Survey 25 inch to the mile maps and are fully zoomable. Each is a set of nine maps.

Maps from 1898:

These are six inch to the mile maps, so easier to get an overall view. Still very detailed and fully zoomable.

1893 Map

A very detailed map of the city centre from 1893, with many points of interest marked by numbers (key to numbers at the bottom of the map). Most of the versions of this that I've seen online are quite low resolution, so I've put a copy here in the highest resolution I could find. Open it in a new window or tab for the best results.

The Dury Andrews Map from 1766

This map of Hertfordshire is very detailed for its time, and includes a digitally redrawn version. You can zoom and and out on both versions and even fade between them. It is presented as tiles, each containing a small area of the county. This link will drop you on the St Albans tile.

Side By Side Maps

This very clever feature on The National Library Of Scotland's website lets you view a historical map on the left, together with an assortment of current maps on the right. Both maps can be dragged, moved and zoomed in sync, so you can see exactly what's in any location now, compared with what was there in the past. This link will drop you on the centre of St Albans, with a large scale OS 25 inch map on the left, and the current Bing map on the right. You can change either map using the drop-down boxes at the top of the page. Due to the amount of information displayed, it works best on larger screens.
